Although ammo limits are no longer a feature either. One other device might be to rule that, as the trollkin are not attacking with direct intent to kill, the contest is not hazardous to the characters (although it may be to thr trollkin)... unless they fumble. Or similar. If you make suasceptibility to fatal injury part of the process, you could limit the danger of accidental character defeats. You could also rule that an archer runs out of ammo on a fumble, although there are lots of problems with that idea.
