        Thats a little bit too strong - if you don't have the appropriate technique, you do get an improv mod (conceivably a really large one), and different techniques do have different weapon and armour ranks. So its a bit more than flavour. But its definitely a lot less a focus of character definition that in RuneQuest, or many other games (though about as much as in D&D), and thats just how a lot of us like it.
