Holy days and duties

Ok, I have what I hope is a less controversial question. :-) How much do your characters' holy days and ceremonial duties come into play in your campaigns? Do you use them just as plot hooks and story devices or are they more than this, making them potentially restrictive? Along these lines, how do you handle time in your games? I had an interesting situation come up recently that resulted from keeping fairly close track of campaign time. A devotee of Humakt was offered a chance to perform a task that would bring him a bit of glory and a stronger reputation as a Sword (it was not, however, Heroquest material). The task took place, in part, during his holy day celebration. We decided that the Humakti character would have to take the entire holy day off from his "job" and perform the regular rituals and sacrifices to his god, even though he was not actually at a temple, shrine, etc. Should he have been forced to attend services at his temple? Should he have been penalized by Humakt? Thanks in advance for your responses, gang.

John

P.S. Generally speaking, can a devotee basically set up a makeshift worship site for the followers of his god if they do not have other access to a temple, shrine, or other holy ground?
