Although technically it should be a simple contest since it's not an important scene, we tend to run all of our combats as Extended. They can be pretty quick.

In case 2, you could if necessary have new simple contests amongst the survivors, though I'd find this a bit unsatisfactory, compared to the feel of an extended contest.

In case 3, you already foresee excellent roleplaying as you allow the players to think up some way to escape the trollkin. Nothing wrong with this outcome!

But I suspect 2 is the most likely, and that's why I prefer extended -- if it's going to be multiple rounds of rolling, that's the best way.

But go with simple if you think the trollkin intend to run away unless they defeat everyone.
