Once you have a nice personal herd, you can start 'gifting' starting herds to worthy cottars and up-and-coming young warriors. You receive your herd back plus in a number of years, but you've gained political and martial supporters who will support you in the moot and elsewhere.

Its not conspicuous consumption that makes you a big man (or woman), its conspicuous feasting and gifting.
