Wulf mentioned "defining your contest properly" - so "Ranged Combat vs close to combat range" or "Ranged Combat vs Hide in Cover", and other people have discussed the "Simple Contest" option. Another possibility, when the enemy are determined to close in on you, is to use your Ranged Combat to Augment your Close Combat in preparation for the fight. Increase your ability (since your having peppered them with arrows puts you in a stronger position), add an edge (they are weakened and so easier to kill) or (and this may be a little dubious, but I think it would work) Loan yourself AP's from your Ranged Combat to your Close Combat (So if you have CC 7w and RC 1w then you will have 27 AP once the foe have closed, and 21 AP "worth" of Ranged Combat to loan (with the normal possibilities that a "good shot" will give you the potential to gain more points and a "poor shot" will leave you worse off as you are still fumbling with the bow when the enemy reaches you...) It's playing a little loose with the definitions of swapping abilities mid contest though...

One other old suggestion (Phillip Hibbs IIRC) is that in an extended contest, give missiles a very high edge (say ^10) - This means the archer does not have to bid high to get a high result, which means he is less likely to put himself out of the contest...
