The answer to this, and Benedict's point about "lumpy" heroes (grin) who specialise in a narrow range of skills, is that this is what followers are for. They round out the hero by providing the skills that he/she is lacking.

Orlanth had his Knowing Companion, his Talking Companion, etc. So do our heroes.
