Not always, After Roland goes mad in Furioso he mows down an enemy unit on his own without noticing he has until afterwards.

But then they make no pretence that spearcarriers are any use in that,
even down to only considering how many heros are on each side when considering how well the war against the Empire is going.

Besides didn't Harrek destroy an entire Island complete with population on his own during the Circumnavigation.
