Yes, they do. It specificially mentions that it changes your ability which, of necessity generates you a few extra AP.

Ever tried to flex your muscles and "warm up" before doing soemthing? Ever pulled a muscle doing so?

And in RQ, have you ever tried and tried and TRIED to get that Bladesharp spell to work but only succeded in draining yourself dry ni magic points so you couldn't heal?

That's what 'failing' an augment is about. Which is why, if you _push_ for a big augment, you can hurt yourself. Just like 'life.' If you want to be safe, then just get an automatic augment at 1/10 (round down) just like is mentioned in Barbarian Adventures.

Augments give you AP. Edges dont'. That's why they are 'cheaper' as they are just not as effective.
