The above is rather in the "I hide behind my shield from its breath attack, and try to disbelieve the dragon" category of use of "refute".

The exact meaning of 'refute' would depend on the precise cosmology of the mystic in question. But it would be a very odd sort of philosophy that can rationalise one's own need to smack one's enemies, and the reality of one's Flying Feet, but regards said armour as "unreal" (provisional, incorrectly preceived, whichever).

In many cases, yes.

In practice, yes. It's going to be hard to characterise this "globally", though -- it would depend very much on the individual tradition.
