Since ability ratings are are logarithmic in nature, it may make sense to scale the difficulty of augmenting with the rating of the ability being augmented. How about this :
Augment Difficulty
+1 = Ability being augmented -10 +2 = Ability being augmented -5 +3 = Ability being augmented +4 = Ability being augmented +5 +5 = Ability being augmented +10
So a 'standard' augment is for +3, and the difficulty equals the ability beign augmented. Lesser and higher augments modify the difficulty number by +/-5 per point.
If you prefer auto-augments, perhaps something like this :
Augment Augmenting ability
+1 More than 10 points bellow ability to augment +3 Within 10 points of ability to augment +5 More than 10 points higher that ability to augment
