Possibly a simpler way of looking at it is:
A given ability rating can defeat x opponents where there is a difference of 1 mastery.
The same ability rating can defeat x*x (x squared) opponents where there is a difference of two masteries.
The same ability rating can defeat x*x*x (x cubed) opponents where there is a difference of three masteries.
This kind of curve is known as exponential and, if my memory of maths is correct, its inverse is known as logarithmic (x, 1/x, 1/(x*x) etc.).
