I tned to favour ingnoring edges as speeding play in most circumstances even when the numbers would not atually cancel out. Mostly I wuld tend to use weapons and armor as part of the bid description.
If its a named item from the description then its part of the characters *schtik* its part of what defines them. Frodo does not just have a coat of mail, he has a coat of mail that is both mithril and given to him by Bilbo. Its fine to augment with or defend with, because every time the player uses it we are reminded of Bilbo and his relationship with Frodo. So the players defensive bid could be 'Bilbo's precious mithril gift turns the blade'. An item of equipment does not get this kind of treatment. So I would, probably be against giving unnamed equipment this kind of treatment as it disadvantages those defining items. YMMV.
