to HW sem to make. i spend a lot of time explaining to poeple why taking abilities that are only ever used to augment one other ability are pointless. You're always better off raising the main ability, of which the secondary ability is realy just a subset anyway.<

But the point is the character conception. A character with Close Combat (Sword) 17 and Hate Father's Killer 12 is far more interesting than a character with Close Combat (18). The latter is Just Another Swordsmen, the former might grow into Hamlet.

Purchase abilites because they reflect the character, not because they make the character more powerful. The rules system allows them to have an effect, to reflect your persona in the contest, not to make the character more effective or efficient. And its a great feeling when one of your secondary abilites or traits augments you unexpectedly.

I have abilites like: Driven to drink and Secretly Likes Oranda. They are there because they reflect my (characters) personality. Once in a while they come into play in a contest, and then the rules shine, but they were not purchased for that purpose.

Its easy to max Hero Wars by just purcahsing one skill - but people who do so are, IMO, missing the fun of the game.

"They were seven in all, and therewithal both sides rushed into the fight. Thorarin slew a house-carle of Thorbiorn's, and Alfgeir another, and there fell also a housecarle of Thorarin's; but no weapons would bite on Odd Katlason. Now the goodwife Aud calls out on her women to part them, and they cast clothes over the weapons." The Story Of The Ere-Dwellers Chapter 18
