I've also had a character who's best ability was dodge and parry, (RQ2, both 90%), and a player in a game who's main feature was a huge door which he called a shield and protected him from most frontal assaults.
Elric of Menibone has his sword (or vice versa), Frodo has his Ring, Harrek his bearcloak. I think there are plenty of examples of narratively interesting equipment. I am aware of the agument that would say that these are not mundane, but the level of mundanity is determined by the ability level so it is a bit of a non-issue. In fact, read any heroic fantasy and the character description will almost certainly mention the weapon being carried.
