The reason I like it is that it brings some much needed clarity to how PCs should handle going negative in an extended contest. In our campaign (James, who started this thread is also a player/narrator), we were much too lax about it and so we tightened up but we still do not have a lot of clarity.

While I agree with you on the need for such an option, I think this is more appropriate in a contest involving physical damage. In a contest, such as a law suit, being able to regain APs from, say, Relationship: Member of Clan or Relationship: Hate Lunars is probably more narratively useful.
