Your explanation is almost canon, as I understand it, but has one omission. When entering the other side, you start off in Kolat's Cave, Issaries' Tent, or whatever. i.e. In the God World/Spirit World/whatever. When you leave, you then travel into the Hero Plane, during a given age (Storm Age, Greater Darkness, etc.) Your Kolat shaman is pretty much useless while in Orlanth's Hall, but given you are only there to pay your respects and leave, this shouldn't be a big problem.
