Another thought, concentrating on the phrase "...give them THE IMPRESSION that..."

If the aim is to make the fight with the Krashtkids the real climax/threat but to spring it on the players as a surprise then I guess you could start with one of the other techniques discussed up until the moment that the Krashtkids appear then declare "New Contest - Reset AP's" - Effectively the cavern has "given up" - If the players beat the Krashtkids then they will be able to escape without difficulty, and if they son't then it won't matter.

I'm assuming that one can always choose to stop participating in a contest, but this effectively reduces your AP to 0 and allows the opponent to administer some sort of final action/coup-de-grace to drive you even lower so is not usually a very useful technique...
