It might help if you took a session to talk to each player in turn and pin down exactly what they wanted for their character. Give them all a goal, a heroic vision. Then promise them they'll get it. Fill in a few intermediary points that they can achieve within a session or two, link up the characters with compatable goals. Make it crystal clear that the PLAYERS are driving the plotline, that they WILL achieve what they want, so long as they actually HAVE a plotline.

On the other hand, it might not... I got a number of people interested in writing their own HeroQuests, and not one appeared...

One of the things I'm looking forward to in Donjon is the idea that, if you WANT a Bag Of Holding, you WILL find one (once you've looted enough bodies), because the player defines the discoveries. But, I wonder (not having yet actually played), will that remove the feeling of achievement, the thrill of discovery? The same might be said of Hero Wars. If the players are in control, they have that much less to look forward to.
