But you don't fail as badly as you would otherwise have done.
Simple contest: suffer marginal defeat, not minor defeat.
Extended contest: lose 1x bid, not 2x bid.
That isn't "no effect". I agree the overall result hasn't changed -- "you still fail" -- but there are situations where failing *less badly* can be important.
