Mark Galeotti and others had a discussion on RPG net with several suggestions.
(cannot find thread right now)

Perhaps for non-magic based games the "Theistic" system of affinities and feats could work for professions or "specializations" i.e. Ace Fighter Pilot (dodge flack, dive out of the sun, strafe moving target). Feats could be added using the normal HP rules.

More prosaic skills such as Simple Repairs, Familiar with Krolar Fighters, Know Krolar Tactics, could be under the other Attributes.

But Affinities and Featsa allow the really Heroic actions to take place.

Psionics or "uncanny" alien powers could be handled this way as well.

Think of Cybernetics as integrated fetishes.
