Edges were really never intended for routine use. HeroQuest reserves them for unusual situations, like a giant thumping you with a massive club. If you want to worry about equipment, HQ uses bonuses (which are much faster to deal with in play). As before, they tend to cancel out, since equipment is rarely why heroes win.
