        Yep. Just don't bother with half of this. The whole point is to avoid the weirdness of the D&D rules, not transplant it.

        So give characters abilities based on the sort of things they should be able to do - don't bother reproducing individual spells except as feats or spells at most. They are just words in HW, who cares what level they are, it doesn't matter much anyway.

        Don't bother about class restrictions for increasing anything. In 3E, they could just be slapping on a level or so of whatever odd class anyway (and with only smallish penalties at worst).

        In basis, just go with what feels right, and ignore the D&D rules, which is the whole point.
