I call it my 5/10 rule, because the bonus is either +5 or +10 for simplicity. So, taking your sword fight, say if one of the combatants wants to use his Strong(18) trait, to throw a barrel at a foe, instead of his swordfighting(2W), out of sheer coolness he can get at least a +5, bringing his Strong up to 3W for that one roll.
Basically, the point is to get players to think more creatively, and use more traits than simply their top 3 skills.
