I really like this idea, and I think most players would find it convincing, too. Lose a normal combat, and you have to rest and heal before you can try again. Lose a social conflict, and you have to do the equivalent. Maybe in your example the player would have to drink some "healing potions" (in other words, get tanked up on beer) then go back to beat up the bouncer who annoyed him earlier that evening :)
