[Suggestions re. the Magic Salt In the Wounds item...]

How 'bout this? The user needs a skill for their "Magic Salt" item. If they use it, they have to win a contest against the appropriate resistance (at least 14, but it may be higher if, e.g., the wound came from a magic item.)

If they win the roll, they can have another try at healing the person with whatever skill or spell they've used.

If they lose the roll, no further minor healing will work, though major healing and time will work.

On a marginal or minor defeat, that's the only effect--it's as if the salt had never been used.

On a major loss, the healing that's already been done is canceled. (i.e. Rurik is "injured". First aid brought him to "impaired". You use the salt, and have a major defeat--he's back down to "injured", and you'll need time or major magic.)

On a complete loss, the healing that's already done is undone, and the injured person drops one further level. (e.g. Rurik is "injured". First aid brings him to "impaired". You use the salt, and have a complete defeat. Rurik drops down below "injured" to "dying", and you need major healing to save him.)

How's that seem? It puts a bit of risk into using the salt, so it isn't quite as if the owner got "major healing" for free.
