I think one can tie oneself in knots here, unless one bears in mind what the nature of the (attempted) resistance actually is; if a direct magical effect is involved, then certainly anything other than a magical ability is doing to resist 'poorly', I agree. But if it's of a character where one is resisting a _physical manifestation_ of magic, as your later example seems to very much imply, then surely physical (or as appropriate, some other) types of resistance are entirely appropriate. (Which isn't to say one still ought not to take into account mythic appropriateness, or my Hidden Monkey Hands beats your your Lion Claw Technique type considerations.)
