I think this more or less got clarified when Greg came on here and stated that Spirits like fetishes because otherwise they're stuck in the Spirit world. That is, they originate in the Spirit world, and don't like being there. When they're "released" I think they just spend some time roaming our world free before returning to the fetish. They're still otherworld spirits, however. So that would solve the "contradiction" in question.
I'm now very down with the "otherworld" explanation for this.
