My own take on it is to let a player improvise it based on an appropriate affinity. Depending on how 'appropriate' it is -- (protection is very appropriate, combat less so) I impose the usual Improvisation penalty (usually -10). If they are a devotee, they can then learn the feat as per regular rules by spending 1 HP.

I will often just let it be 'no effect, No Further Minor Healing' be possible. Or we let other folks augment the healer with their own abilities and affinities. Or we use healing herbs and medicinal alchol (more the latter than the former)

One person in our group has 'tough' which is good to assist in healing -- its not as bad as it looks. (He's wanting to get a True Grit ability. (blasted macho Humakti =) )

Usually, an enquiring mind can find a way to get things done. And hey, there's always the First Aid ability -- anyone can learn that.
