The game system gives you more of an advantage the greater difference in skill. In math terms, there are 400 possible die roll combinations. Out of these, the higher skill (within the same mastery range, across masteries all changes) wins some level of victory more often than the lower a number of times equal to the square of the difference.

That is:

11 vs 10: 11 wins 1/400 more often than 10. 12 vs 10: 12 wins 4/400 more often than 10. ...
18 vs 10: 18 wins 64/400 more often than 10. 19 vs 10: 19 wins 81/400 more often than 10.

In other words, when your skills are very close, a one or two point difference doesn't matter much, it is still about 50/50, so even that one or two point augment doesn't make much difference. On the other hand, when skills are less closely matched, each point makes a much bigger difference.
