Aware targets *always* resist with the most appropriate ability. In most cases, the ability does not have to be magical.

I don't believe this is the case, since the purpose of a Howling Gale is not to blow down houses etc. The 14 resistance to magic occurs only (1) when there is no appropriate resistance, like casting a spell on yourself; (2) when the magic is being used "properly." [HQ.98] The trees would resist with their Strong-Rooted 10W2.
