If you find this problematic (I don't particularly), then point out to the players that they're playing in a tactically unsound manner. That is, they're actually more likely to win if they bid small amounts than bidding large amounts when the opponent is weaker. If they understand this, and still attack large, they're making a statement about how their characters feel (strong enough to be brash).
