Easy solution to that.. When we *want* to allow Mud Lake to swallow, we throw our charms back into it, with some nice incantation,

	Take this, not me
	Take our enemies
	Not our land

Which reminds me, this lake has a certain "Uz" kind of feeling. Use that, and let it radiate some darkness...
