Hmmm, have you ever dealt with a real much bottom? I have a clear mental image of being in a row boat in this sort of lake, in apparently about 2.5 feet of water. I stuck an oar down, until my arm was reaching into the water, and still I hadn't struck anything firm, almost the entire length of the oar was in the "bottom."

I suppose that is soft earth, but I'm also picturing this as a place that physically, anything falls in, it is gone forever, buried deep in muck. Spiritually I want it to have the same effect, a bottomless spiritual pit that engulfs things, maybe not destroying them, but keeping them lost in its depths forever. Which is why shamans can sometimes get interesting items/spirits out....

Having said all of that, I'm not sure swallow is quite the right word, but it was an off the cuff description. If I ever need to write this up for anyone else's use I'll spend some time with a thesaurus and try to come up with a more evocative term.
