(Abjectly following up my own post)

By which I mean that the effect generates a shockwave just as does a thunderclap or a stun grenade. In close proximity I would expect it to have a similar effect to a stun grenade.

The fact that it generates the shockwave by pure magic rather than by a mundane explosion just means that the other possible effects of an explosion (heat, shrapnel) are absent.

If this is not what they do then I think the affinity has been rather misleadingly named.
