They were friends and allies? You've fallen into the trap of assuming that just because they worship the same religion means they like each other. If that were so, relations between Europe and America would be a lot warmer than they are now.

We don't know their motivations for turning up. They could after all have been hired. The fact they were driven off by the cavalry corps suggests their support was lukewarm.

Most of Sartar isn't fighting the Lunar Empire so the Pol Joni aren't all that unusual.
