Which isn't necessarily the part an outsider might think is most important.

Consider the Clint Eastwood character in 'Unforgiven'. At the start of the story he's had a long and successful career as a gunfighter and has retired from it. His strongest relationship is with his wife who is now dead (but the relationship is still 'relevant to play'). He's doing his best to make a life as a farmer but isn't prospering and has to take on one last killing job. The film is about that job, but everything that happens is coloured by his backstory.
