But not all contests have lethal results...

Sure, during the final showdown with the villain of the episode, hanging tough is a reasonable attitude. But most contests that arise during play shouldn't be of the kind that will stop the plot dead if you lose them. (I'm reminded of an old CoC scenario where we couldn't make any headway because of one failed Library Use roll...)

It sounds to me like you're including a lot of combat in your games, with dangerous opponents, and more or less requiring the players to win every time. If that's the case, sure, they're gonna need a lot of hero points. As narrator you have both the power and the responsibility to balance this sort of thing.

Absolutely. A heroquest is the sort of pivotal event where you definitely need to get good results, because the consequences are so far-reaching. So yes, I think I would spend hero points more freely on a heroquest (haven't been on one yet, sad to say).
