This method doesn't really cut down on adding up at
all - you have to do a lot more number fiddling.
Instead of someone adding up their augments ahead of a
contest, you've got to compare the target number and
the number rolled (1 subtraction), see if any augments
make a difference (1 comparison per augment and
combination of augments plus one one or more additions
per combination of augments).
Been there, done it, almost convinced my players that
the Hero System used less arithmetic after that.
Auto-augments are great 'cause:
(a) You can do most of your adding up beforehand -
most of the time for similar conflicts characters have
a relatively fixed set of augments.
(b) It cuts down the amount of dice rolling. If you
dare to admit to ever playing 3rd edition DnD you'll
know about taking 10 and 20 - the auto-augment is
taking 10 in HeroQuest.
