I can think of situations where you could do this, if you describe it properly. "As the Greydog thug approaches, looking for a helpless victim to try to even the feud, she steps forward, holding her spear like she means business. 'Greydogs are killing children now? Not if I have anything to say about it.'" Here the contest is essentially "Defend my Children" and Love Family is used appropriately. Were the steadwife to pick up a spear and join a fight in progress, I think Love Family would not be appropriate, and she'd be best using it to augment. And if a broo is threatening, it would be almost impossible to use Love Family (though again, it's a great augment).
