Hmmm. So the point is that the contest may not go as planned, right? My advice? Don't plan contests in any way. Ever. Make them all up on the fly as suits the situation. This avoids tons and tons of problems like the one above.

I mean, in a larger sense, it might dawn on you that it would be interesting to have X sort of contest, but a player may have their character walk away. You have three options at that point, force the player into the contest (bad, IMO), find a sneaky way to get the contest to occur anyhow (like having some other NPC provide it), or just go with the flow and not worry about it. You'll find something equally interesting around the next corner.
