A race

I'm catching up now that my gf has gone back home to California.

Sam had the interesting "fixed length contest" question, which was answered.

But in a similar vein, how would you do a race? Say you have 3 or 4 PCs in a race. Do you do each person against the race course? (That seems somewhat cumbersome.) Is there a more elegant way to do it?
