IMO the Roll of dice does not impact the Rule/Rule Playing argument as
is somthing that can done in-character, i.e. "Trevor makes a pretty
average swing, expecting the 4pts of damage to bounch of the Troll's
Armour".
But one can not really discuss whether it is allowed or most
appropriate to use interpersonal abilities, relationships, or
personality traits to decide an issue and still keep in character.
