The rationale I've heard on this subject related to the compromise. Basically, spirits that are of the mundane world are like humans in that they learn, and grow (and perhaps even die, I'm not sure). While spirits of the spirit world are frozen in time, immortal for that, but unable to change. Just as the gods are, and, presumably, essences from that otherworld. An increase in a spell rating, or a feat rating represents the character learning, not the god or essence getting more powerful.

What you can do with spirits is to learn more about them, and increase your relationship to them. This is often a reasonable augment for a fetish spirit (to say nothing of getting it to work in difficult situations), so look at that. Tradition charms are just to small to have relationship effects apparently (though it might not be out of the question to buy one).
