I believe that the problem nowadays is that if you do join, then, to use your example, Orlanth will shun you, and you'll lose your feats from him. Unless it's Kolat we're talking about.

That is, it's easy enough to say "just join." But unless the tradition is friendly with the pantheon or tradition you worship, then the beings in question aren't going to allow you to use their abilities, even if you can somehow manage to convince the people who can induct you to allow you in.

Which all actually makes sense. The only question I had was the extent to which gods tended to be against other gods. And, apparently, it tends to follow the lines of the cultures. That is, I used to think it was by pantheon, but now I understand that it's opened up to each god having his own prejudices.

But otherwise, yeah, where allowed, I think it's fun to have characters get involved in as much religion as seems reasonable for the character. I like my current wizard character, because I think he may get very syncretist about his religion and risk becoming a sorcerer, in essence (double entendre unintended).
