But mixing religions was extremely common in more ancient times - it's only really the Judaic tradition that insists on exclusive worship of a single god. For the Babylonians, or Greeks, or Romans, if a neighbour worshipped a powerful god it was perfectly normal to build them a temple yourself to get their favours. In some cases, you would even go to war on your neighbour, capture the god's idol and bring it back in state to your own city in order to have direct access to the god... alternatively you could go down the Misapplied Worship route, by worshipping a foreign god using your own familiar rites and customs - such as the Celtic goddess Sulis being worshipped as Minerva.
