The way I think of it -
If you are just swapping around AP with cool special effects (whether it's a magical lightning bolt, a called shot to the head, or a back-flip onto the bannister) then use the the regular AP bidding mechanism.
If you're trying to change an aspect of the fight other than AP (disarm him, get yourself a bonus, give your opponent a penalty, change weapons) then it's probably an unrelated action. "Unrelated" really just means that your action won't affect the APs of the contest when performed.
Frex:
I declare "I jump up on the banister rail"
I can:
Just make a big bid (after all, jumping onto a 2" wide rail is probably a
tough jump, but it will disorient my opponent, giving me an advantage).
or
Make it an unrelated action, and (assuming I make he jump) I'll have a +10
positional advantage bonus as long as I'm on the bannister and he's on the
ground. The APs don't change just because I've made the leap and gotten a
bonus, however - yes, the bonus is an "advantage", but it's the same as
switching from "Sword and Shield 17" to "Lightning Bolt 7W" in the midle of
the fight.
My 2 centavos.
