I think it's a very useful GM tool, not only to make an earlier Contest have an effect later on, even if the Characters ultimately win (this might be a fight before the "Big Bad" or it might be some other contest where the wound is a "non-physical" penalty. An eating contest, where the "wounds" are the after-effects of a large meal, or a debate where the "wounds" are the lingering effects of arguments or accusations which might not be immediatelty forgotten when the contest ends...), but also to further "control" the contest, and prevent a bad roll from prematurely ending the contest (Not something you want or need to do every time - if the players can't lose then there is no challenge, and sometimes the consequences of failure are as interesting as the benefits of success - but occasionally it can be handy to have another ace up your sleeve without having to "fudge" the dice rolls.
