The Attacker's weapon rank is compared to Defender's armor rank for a net edge or handicap. An edge means that the defender will lose *more* AP than the attacker would, while a handicap means he loses *less*:

The dogman's Bite (^1) is compared to the human's Leather & Shield (^2) for a net ^-1 handicap to the dogman.
On a 5 AP bid, the dogman risks 5 AP, while the Human risks only 4 AP as the base (this base value is then multiplied for degree of victory).

On the Human's turn, his Spear (^3) is compared to the Dogmans (non-existant) armor for a net ^3 edge to the human. On a 5 AP bid, the Human risks 5 AP, while the dogman stands to lose 8 AP as the base.

Hope this helps.
