Personally, *I* would require the physical presence of the Grimoire if you wanted to augment with it - sort of like requiring the physical presence of a sword if you wanted to augment "Intimidating" with "Sword Fighting".

As a modern parallel, I augment my "Know Heroquest Rules" with my "Library of HeroQuest Books". No books, no augment (I don't have eiditic memory).
